JINEN Butoh Workshop – “Life of Flower”
You are the one and only flower in this world.
A flower gives birth to flowers.
A flower opens itself.
A flower unfolds life.
From darkness to light,
beyond life and death,
the flower opens its body to the universe
without fear,
until the very end of its life.
It reminds us of a silent
“Body Revolutions (rebellion of the body)” that does not fight.
A flower is love.
Through this workshop, each participant will discover their own single flower — their solo Butoh dance.
Participants will dance their Solos, Duo, Trio in various squares throughout the city of Pontedera, and together create a Butoh Procession through the city.
At the end, in front of Pontedera Station, all workshop participants will perform an improvisation-based JINEN Butoh group performance, offered as a flower of life — our collective prayer for peace.

Embodying the Spirit: the body finds its way
This workshop explores both innovative ways to create personal movement, emphasizing the space and stillness between movements within our bodies, and the process of erasing and re-creating the body through guided improvisation inspired by nature imagery. In this workshop, we will focus on the evocative images of Egon Schiele’s paintings, mixing these with different textures and energies. Experience training methods towards a supple body and mind and investigate aesthetics common to butoh through creative explorations. ETS explores endless questions: What is life? What is the human condition? What is the body? The workshop structure includes explorations of physical, natural, and transforming bodies. Partner work will facilitate participants’ individual and collective journeys.

Echo of Ashes is the latest in a solo seriesof “grandfather dances” in which Joan invokes her ancestry through her embodied art. Previously this piece was performed at the Salish Sea Butoh Festival in Port Townsend (WA), for Butoh Tacoma (WA) and in Vancouver BC to live music by Seattle-based guitarist Bill Horist.

Hikariis part of a series of pieces inspired by light pollution, by how artificial light affects animals, insects and humans. Other performances were collaborations with Lucie Betz in Freiburg, Germany with live music by pianist Miku Arizono, and a solo performed in Seattle to a live trio composed of acoustic bass, violin and clarinet.Hikari will also be performed at the Kyoto Butoh Festival in November 2026.
Michael Shannon is a sound/recording artist, musician, photographer, and performer of experimental media. He is a member of Seattle-based performing groups Gyre, Eye Music, Echore, Aono Jikken Ensemble, Animist Orchestra, and Broken Mask (Bay Area). Joan and Michael have been collaborating for many years.
Atsushi Takenouchi (www.jinen-butoh.com)
Joined butoh dance company „Hoppo-Butoh-ha“in Hokkaido in 1980. His last performance with the company “Takazashiki”(1984) was worked on by butoh-founder Tatsumi Hijikata.
Atsushi has started his own “Jinen Butoh“since 1986 and created solo works “Itteki“, “Ginkan “as a universal expression of nature, earth, and ancient times and impressions of the moment, meeting with people and environment.
He made 3 year “JINEN” tour project throughout Japan for 600 site-specific improvisations (1996-1999). During this time, he started to be inspired by a spirit of the universe of
Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno.
Since 2002, he has been mainly based in Europe, working on Butoh dance collaboration project with dancers and actors in France, Poland, U.S.A and other countries.
Hiroko Komiya (www.jinen-butoh.com/hiroko_profile_e.html)
Creates sounds from various objects, like water, stones, metal bowls, toys and voice.
Her music is designed to let the sound come naturally from each object, instrument, as if they are breathing and whispering of each life.
She regularly accompanies Butoh dance performance by Atsushi Takenouchi.
Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh
After studying with masters Kazuo Ohno and Yoko Ashikawa in Tokyo in the late 80s and performing with Ashikawa’s group Gnome, Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh settled in Seattle and founded Dappin’ Butoh in 1990.
She is a co-founder of DAIPANbutoh Collective. Joan performed at the New York, Chicago, Portland, Boulder, Seattle, Salish Sea, Amsterdam, Santiago, Vienna and Paris butoh festivals, and a butoh symposium at the University of California (LA).
Joan has known Atsushi and Hiroko for many years, sharing artistic practices and deeply philosophical conversations.
She spent two months with Eugenia Vargas and Makiko Tominaga in Eugenia’s Axis Project in Mexico in the summer of 2025. A Ph.D. in Dance & Related Arts from Texas Woman’s University, she is featured in Sondra Fraleigh’s books and in Butoh America by Tanya Calamoneri.
She creates site-specific work for Japanese gardens in Seattle annually. Since living in Krakow 2004-2006, she has been known as Kogut (rooster). www.seattlebutoh-laage.com

Tu sei l’unico e solo fiore in questo mondo.
Un fiore dà vita ad altri fiori.
Un fiore si apre.
Un fiore sboccia alla vita.
Dall’oscurità alla luce,
oltre la vita e la morte,
il fiore apre il proprio corpo all’universo
senza paura,
fino alla fine della sua vita.
Ci ricorda una silenziosa
“Rivoluzione del corpo (ribellione del corpo)” che non combatte.
Un fiore è amore.
Attraverso questo workshop, ogni partecipante scoprirà il proprio fiore unico: la propria danza Butoh da solista.
I partecipanti danzeranno i loro assoli, i loro duetti e i loro trii in varie piazze della città di Pontedera, creando insieme una JINEN Butoh Procession attraverso la città.
Alla fine, davanti alla Stazione di Pontedera, tutti i partecipanti al workshop si esibiranno in una performance di gruppo di JINEN Butoh basata sull’improvvisazione, offerta come un fiore di vita — la nostra preghiera collettiva per la pace.

Embodying the Spirit: the body finds its way
Questo workshop esplora sia modi innovativi per creare movimenti personali, ponendo l’accento sia sullo spazio e sulla quiete tra i movimenti dei nostri corpi, sia sul processo di cancellazione e riorganizzazione del corpo attraverso l’improvvisazione guidata ispirata alle immagini della natura. In questo workshop ci concentreremo sulle immagini evocative dei dipinti di Egon Schiele, mescolandole con diverse texture ed energie. Sperimenteremo metodi di allenamento per ottenere un corpo e una mente flessibili e indagheremo l’estetica comune al butoh attraverso esplorazioni creative. Il butoh esplora infinite domande: Che cos’è la vita? Che cos’è la condizione umana? Che cos’è il corpo? La struttura del workshop include esplorazioni dei corpi fisici, naturali e
in trasformazione. Il lavoro in coppia faciliterà i percorsi individuali e collettivi dei partecipanti.

Echo of Ashes è l’ultimo di una serie di solo di “danze del nonno” in cui Joan evoca i suoi antenati attraverso la sua arte del corpo. Hikari fa parte di una serie di lavori ispirati all’inquinamento luminoso, come la luce artificiale influisca su animali, insetti ed esseri umani.

ATSUSHI TAKENOUCHI
Si unisce alla compagnia di danza “Hoppo-Butoh-ha” a Hokkaido nel 1980.
La sua ultima performance con la compagnia “Takazashiki” (1984) è stata creata con Tatsumi Hijikata, fondatore della danza butoh.
Atsushi ha iniziato con il suo JINEN Butoh dal 1986. Le sue creazioni “Itteki” e “Ginkan”, rappresentano espressioni universali della natura, della terra, di tempi antichi e impressioni del momento, di incontri con persone e paesaggi.

HIROKO KOMIYA
Creatrice di sonorità partendo da svariati oggetti ed elementi, pietre, conchiglie, acqua, recipienti di metallo, giocattoli e voce.
La sua musica è concepita per permettere al suono di emergere naturalmente da ogni oggetto e strumento come se questi stessero respirando e sussurrando, animati da vita propria.

JOAN LAAGE/Kogut Butoh
Dopo aver studiato con i maestri Kazuo Ohno e Yoko Ashikawa a Tokyo alla fine degli anni ’80 e aver ballato con il gruppo Gnome di Ashikawa, Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh si è stabilita a Seattle e ha fondato Dappin’ Butoh nel 1990.
È co-fondatrice del DAIPANbutoh Collective. Joan si è esibita ai festival di butoh di New York, Chicago, Portland, Boulder, Seattle, Salish Sea, Amsterdam, Santiago, Vienna e Parigi, nonché a un simposio sul butoh presso l’Università della California (Los Angeles).
Joan conosce Atsushi e Hiroko da molti anni, con cui condivide pratiche artistiche e conversazioni profondamente filosofiche.
Ha trascorso due mesi con Eugenia Vargas e Makiko Tominaga nell’ambito dell’Axis Project di Eugenia in Messico nell’estate del 2025.
