Piercing Heart è stato rappresentato due volte allo Shimmer: Seattle Summer Butoh Festival, presso la Chapel di Seattle nel 2023, in un festival di musica sperimentale a Vienna con i musicisti Florian Feit e Christoph Punzmann nello stesso anno, e a Chicago all’Asian Improv aRts Midwest organizzato da Butoh Curious Chi.
Dopo Spazio NU, Joan presenterà il lavoro a Bruxelles.

Workshop

Embodying the Spirit è un processo di cancellazione e ricreazione del corpo attraverso l’improvvisazione guidata ispirata alle immagini della natura e alle stampe Ukiyoe.

Consente di sperimentare metodi di allenamento per ottenere un corpo e una mente flessibili e di approfondire l’estetica del butoh attraverso la ricerca artistica.

Il workshop esplora infinite domande: che cos’è la vita? Che cos’è la condizione umana? Che cos’è il corpo?

La struttura del workshop comprende l’indagine dei corpi fisici, naturali e in trasformazione.
Il lavoro con i partner faciliterà il percorso individuale e collettivo dei partecipanti.

In questo workshop ci concentreremo sul corpo come elemento primordiale e lavoreremo con le famose stampe giapponesi Ukiyoe per creare sequenze di movimenti ispirate al periodo trascorso da Joan con la compagnia di Yoko Ashikawa a Tokyo.

Embodying the Spirit attinge alla formazione di Joan con gli Ohno e Ashikawa a Tokyo, Atsushi Takenouchi in Europa e al suo background come praticante di Tai Chi e orticoltrice professionista.

Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh

Dopo aver studiato con i maestri Kazuo Ohno e Yoko Ashikawa a Tokyo alla fine degli anni ‘80 e aver danzato con il gruppo Gnome di Ashikawa, Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh si è trasferita a Seattle dove ha fondato la compagnia Dappin’ Butoh nel 1990.

È co-fondatrice del collettivo DAIPANbutoh.
Joan si è esibita ai festival di butoh di New York, Chicago, Seattle, Amsterdam, Vienna, Santiago e Parigi, e a un simposio sul butoh presso l’Università della California (Los Angeles).

Ha conseguito un dottorato in Danza e Arti correlate presso la Texas Woman’s University ed è citata nei libri di Sondra Fraleigh e in Butoh America di Tanya Calamoneri.

Ogni anno crea opere site-specific per i giardini giapponesi di Seattle.
Joan è un’appassionata praticante di Tai Chi con un background nella danza e nel teatro asiatici.

Da quando ha vissuto a Cracovia dal 2004 al 2006, è conosciuta come Kogut (gallo).

– Pontedera si trova a 20 km dall’Aeroporto Internazionale di Pisa ”Galileo Galilei” e a  57 km dall’Aeroporto Internazionale di Firenze “Amerigo Vespucci”.
– La stazione dei treni (fermata “Pontedera-Casciana Terme”) è ben servita dal Servizio Ferroviario Regionale e ben collegata con entrambi gli aereoporti internazionali di Pisa e Firenze.
– Lo Spazio Nu è facilmente raggiungibile dalla fermata dei treni “Pontedera-Casciana Terme” (15 minuti a piedi).

So many thoughts and desires pierce our consciousness, our hearts, sometimes settling, other times escaping through the fleeting air.

Where do we find our freedom and peace? In confinement or total abandonment?

Piercing Heart was performed twice at Shimmer: Seattle Summer Butoh Festival, at the Chapel venue in Seattle in 2023, at an experimental music festival in Vienna with musicians Florian Feit and Christoph Punzmann the same year, and in Chicago at Asian Improv aRts Midwest brought by Butoh Curious Chi.

After Spazio NU, Joan will perform the piece in Bruxelles.

Workshop
Embodying the Spirit: the body finds its way

This workshop is a process of erasing and re-creating the body through guided improvisation inspired by nature imagery and Ukiyoe prints.

Experience training methods towards a supple body and mind and investigate aesthetics common to butoh through creative explorations.

ETS explores endless questions: What is life? What is the human condition? What is the body?

The workshop structure includes explorations of physical, natural, and transforming bodies.
Partner work will facilitate participants’ individual and collective journeys.

In this workshop, we will focus on the elemental body and work with famous Japanese Ukiyoe wood block prints to create movement sequences inspired by Joan’s time with Yoko Ashikawa’s company in Tokyo.

The workshop draws on Joan’s training with the Ohnos and Ashikawa in Tokyo, Atsushi Takenouchi in Europe and her background as a Tai Chi practitioner and professional gardener.

Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh

After studying with masters Kazuo Ohno and Yoko Ashikawa in Tokyo in the late 80s and performing with Ashikawa’s group Gnome, Joan Laage/Kogut Butoh settled in Seattle and founded Dappin’ Butoh in 1990.
She is a co-founder of DAIPANbutoh Collective.

Joan performed at the New York, Chicago, Seattle, Amsterdam, Vienna, Santiago, and Paris butoh festivals, and a butoh symposium at the University of California (LA).

A Ph.D. in Dance &Related Arts from Texas Woman’s University, she is featured in Sondra Fraleigh’s books and in Butoh America by Tanya Calamoneri.

She creates site-specific work for Japanese gardens in Seattle annually.

Joan is an avid Tai Chi practitioner with a background in Asian dance/theater.

Since living in Krakow 2004-2006, she has been known as Kogut (rooster).
