WORKSHOP
Dance Improvisation: Resilience and Support in Difficult Times

Venerdì 9 Settembre: ore 15.00 > 20.00
Sabato 10 Settembre: ore 10.00>13.00 e ore 15.00>18.00
Domenica 11 Settembre: ore 10.00>13.00 e ore 15.00>18.00

Sabato 10 Settembre, ore 21.00
Revelations of Life as a Dance Improviser

Kirstie draws from her extensive experience of Contact Improvisation, dance techniques, the Alexander technique, Aikido, meditation, and her broad knowledge of improvisation in performance. She shares her work through facilitated exercises, open time for play and exploration, movement scores, observations, discussion, and humour. Much of the work is experienced through partnering and connection with others, balanced with solo time for processing and reflection. Weather-permitting we will also explore scores that take us outside.

There is deep inspiration and rigor in a practice of improvisation that posits vulnerability at its heart. Developing the skills to be able to care for, engage, respect, and respond to that state of openness in oneself, others and our environment generatescreative work that is powerful and transformative. Learning from a place of interconnectedness can give us the resilience and insight to face into life’s challenges and complexities. In this workshop Kirstie shares the movement practices and underlying philosophies she has developed over forty years of committed involvement with danceimprovisation as a ‘life-practice’ that hashelped her negotiate life’s ups and downs.

Saturday 10th September, h 9.00 p.m.
Revelations of Life as a Dance Improviser
Improvisation / Talk / Film Showing with Kirstie Simson

During this evening event, through the use of movement&dialogue, Kirstie Simson a renowned Dance Improvisation will share her experience of a life dedicated to the exploration of embodied intelligence through forty years of her performance and teaching practice. She will speak about the initial epiphany that transformed her life, up to the present day and how her dance practice helped her negotiate a life-threatening illness. She now calls her work Practices that Offer Resilience & Support in Difficult Times and is curious about how embodied intelligence practices can help us as we move forward in this time of climate crisis.

After the movement/talk Kirstie will show a film entitled Hool that she completed in 2019 with Mexican filmmaker/ Architect Isaac Zambra in Merida, Mexico.

Film Hool
The inspiration for this multidisciplinary film collaboration between Mexican architect-filmmaker Isaac Zambra, photographer Mario Morales (MX), and dancers Kirstie Simson (UK/USA) and Martin Piliponsky (AR) is the exploration of the relationship between architecture and the moving body.
In the span of a single day, from sunrise to sunset the filmmakers follow the dancers as they move, guided in their work by the whispers of past narratives contained within the spaces of the long-abandoned hacienda ‘San Antonio Hool’, in Merida, Mexico.
A meditative spell is cast during the process of capturing the powerful magic of this location on camera, which permeates and affects each member of the team.
Ghosts of past, present, and future are listened to—and live again—through the dancers’ embodied expression, honoring the haunting beauty of its architecture, the sense of suspended time, and a celebration of the mysteries of life.
