Summer 3 weeks from 10 to 29 July 2013
Intensive JINEN Butoh workshop & long performance
in Pontedera/ Italy

Intensive Butoh workshop and long performance in Pontedera ( Pisa )
conducted by Atsushi Takenouchi, live music by Hiroko Komiya

Any small life has own life time.
The butterfly life has birth and death in the short arch of time.
Nights and days, their whole life or one measure.
As the butterfly feels whole life in this 3weeks, we explore how deep we feel our own life and presence through this 3weeks.
And at the same time, we explore how we express it on the stage through this 3weeks Butoh workshop.

– four seasons of life – embrace life and death-

– earth, water, wind & fire and fauna and flora in the nature

– all existence

Four seasons of life – embracing life and death with butoh -“Spring” – Growth. Blooming. Gift from previous season. Precious turning point of life. Nourished soil in winter give new life for flowers. Death transform into Life.

“Summer” – Summer Sun has two faces. One face is strong energy for plants to grow as much as they can.

Another face is too strong energy for plants to make them dry and to sack their life with too much sun.

“Autumn” – Even began to wither even lose power, the beauty of the flower is lurking quietly. What is this “beauty” ? For the next generation to take over the seed, it is beauty of bliss, beauty of sacrifice.

“Winter” – This season symbolizes death. Flower that die will return to the soil with nourishment. Where  the spirit of flowers will go. Is this spirit also a gift for the Spring?

Become flowers, and dance this four seasons of their life. Also insect, animal and spirit. Naturally we discover “ four seasons of human life ”. This is the dance of our life. Each of us can find a lot of precious dance in our life. Getting more deeper this four seasons theme, it reaches to the mystery of life. It faces most important theme of my Butoh “bliss, purification, love, requiem, sacrifice, life & death”. Dance deeply with embracing life & death. Then, the dance which comes from inner body start telling  “death is part of life circulation”. Forget everything, with embracing all the beautiful four seasons.

Earth, water, wind & fire and fauna and flora in the nature

Where do we really come from? Long ago, at the time of the big bang, it seems that all forms of life composed on single and unique entity.

If this is the case, hundreds of millions of years have now passed, during which our respective lives have branched into different directions. In the same way that a tree spreads into branches, the galaxy and stars have detached themselves from the trunk of the universe.

The planets and Earth split off from the solar system. Furthermore, the earth, the sky and the sea have also branched and after this, plants and animals have subdivided. People, just like me, are also part of this ramification.

If those hundreds of millions of years have really built our body, then surely, somewhere inside of us, we should have kept a memory of when we were water, of when we were earth, of when we were wind and fire.

Open the door of these memories and let’s try and dance, transformed into those four elements, into this flora and fauna. Through dance, let’s remember that our body was at one with Earth and the universe.

Futhermore, if the leaf that I am, coming from this branched universe, could feel, even just a little, the weight of those billions of years, then I will realize that, far from being just some simple little organisms, I myself, just like others, form the tree trunk constituting the beginning of the universe.

You are the wind, you are the fire

You are the water, you are the earth

You are the plant, and you are also the animal.

Through dance, the borders separating us from the four elements, from the fauna and flora will progressively fade away. Life, under multiple shapes, is

then linked to everything, and represents a dancing presence.

all existence

Staying in front of audience is to give all your life to them. The same you do with your love. Also without moving and being still in front of the audience, you can show all your existence.

“Dance is devotion to life.” I learned this while travelling nature fields called JINEN. This has never changed since old times and will never change. This means I should dance to “my life,” to the moment, and to now, which lasts forever.

I got my body from the earth. I got my life from the sun and the moon, my parents, my friends and my love. So I’ll return the gifts to these universes. I’ll return them to others through a dancing body and soul. When I see a tiny flower selflessly, I meet a dance filled with the joy of “life.” And then, my body is filled up with the water of “life.” The seeds of memory inside me become a bud.

The sounds of wind are the whispering of the earth. The sound of minerals is the muttering of machines. We hear the sounds of the universe through explosion and noise and stillness.

Oh, thousands of sounds, take our souls far away to our unknown world. As we travel, remind us of forgotten dances. On the sun and the moon, there are young men singing eternal songs at every place in the world. Let’s begin an ancient and modern fete of “relics of life” holding artifice and natureon earth.
